Theme: “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”
Each October, Fire Prevention Week reminds us that safeguarding homes against fire is more than a one-day effort — it’s an ongoing process. As Inspected Moore (serving all of Southern Michigan), we view Fire Prevention Week as an ideal moment to share best practices, educate homeowners, and highlight how professional inspections help protect both lives and property.
Why Fire Prevention Week Matters
Fire Prevention Week traces its roots to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and has been observed annually ever since as a national public safety campaign. Over the decades, it has become a cornerstone for promoting fire-safe behaviors in homes, schools, and communities.
In 2025, the NFPA and its partners focus on a growing and somewhat modern hazard: lithium-ion batteries (commonly found in phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and more). Improper charging, storage, or disposal of these batteries can lead to overheating or fire risk. The campaign encourages three key actions:
- Buy safe, certified batteries and products
- Charge carefully and avoid overcharging
- Recycle old or damaged batteries at proper facilities
This year’s theme acknowledges that fire risk evolves with technology — and that prevention must evolve too.
Home Fire Risks in Our Area & Why Inspections Matter
While lithium-ion battery safety is topical, many of the fire risks in local homes remain longstanding and preventable. In our service area — including the greater metro Detroit area — homes we inspect often share certain vulnerabilities:
- Electrical issues: old wiring, overloaded circuits, or ungrounded systems
- Faulty appliances or connections: dryers, water heaters, or HVAC systems
- Chimney, fireplace, or flue problems: cracks, soot buildup, or missing dampers
- Insufficient smoke detector coverage / nonfunctional alarms
- Poor ventilation or combustible materials stored near heat sources
By catching issues early, a professional home inspection helps reduce the odds of fire before they escalate into emergencies.
At Inspected Moore, our standard home inspection includes detailed checks of:
- The electrical system (panels, wiring, receptacles)
- Heating / cooling systems (including flues and vents)
- Fireplace / chimney / flue systems
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Structural, roof, exterior, foundation, plumbing, etc.
If we identify fire-risk conditions (e.g. a malfunctioning breaker, frayed wiring, or blocked venting), we recommend repairs or further evaluation by licensed electricians or HVAC professionals.
Fire Prevention Tips to Be Aware Of
Lithium-Ion Battery Safety (2025 focus)
- Use only the manufacturer’s charger or a reputable certified replacement
- Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface (not on a bed, sofa, or carpet)
- Avoid charging near flammable materials or in direct sunlight
- Don’t leave devices charging overnight unattended
- Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place
- Dispose of old / damaged batteries at designated recycling centers — never throw in household trash
General Fire Safety Practices
- Test Smoke & CO Alarms Monthly
Replace batteries at least annually (or heed 10-year sealed units) and replace entire unit if it’s over 10 years old. - Install Alarms in All Key Locations
Every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including basement). - Create & Practice an Escape Plan
Draw two escape routes from each room. Choose a meeting place outside. Practice drills with the whole family. - Keep Fire Extinguishers Accessible
At least one on each level (kitchen, garage, near heat sources). Know how to use the “PASS” method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep). - Be Mindful with Open Flames & Heat Sources
- Keep flammable items (cloth, paper, chemicals) away from furnaces, space heaters, and fireplaces
- Never leave candles unattended
- Clean lint traps & dryer vents regularly
- Use surge protectors for electronics
- Know When to Call for Help
If a fire starts, leave the building immediately and call 911. Don’t try to fight a fire beyond your control.
